The Bavarian National Museum, founded in 1855 by King Maximilian II of Bavaria, was built according to plans by the archive director baron von Aretin. The plan was to raise a Wittelsbach museum.
The plan was to build a Wittelsbach Museum. It should not only be a museum, but display the most interesting and patriotic monuments and other remnants of past times.
King Maximilian II, who preferred to become a teacher rather than a king, gave the right start to this work.
Prince Regent Luitpold, his brother, renovated the building in 1899. We can see his statue and insignia everywhere.
