New Year's Day hike at Hohneck
We will set off from the Col de la Schlucht pass and head towards Les Trois Fours, a place steeped in history, where we will enjoy breathtaking panoramic views of the Saint-Grégoire valley.
We will continue on to Hohneck, where we will enjoy a glass of Crémant d'Alsace at the viewpoint, before descending through a beautiful pine forest.
You will discover
➤ Hohneck, at an altitude of over 1,200 meters, is also one of the most famous and most visited peaks in the Vosges! It is located in the subalpine zone. This zone, which follows the montane zone, is easily recognizable by its rocky and steep slopes, a lack of vegetation due to strong winds and low temperatures, where fir and beech trees no longer grow, giving way to alpine plant species and stubble fields, vast grassy expanses similar to alpine pastures in the Alps, although the Vosges subalpine zone is unique.
➤ La Bresse is a town located near the German border. In the heart of the Ballons des Vosges Regional Nature Park, the La Bresse–Hohneck ski resort offers ski slopes surrounded by lakes, mountain ridges, and forests. The Hautes Chaumes are located between the Trois Fours to the north and the Rainkopf to the south. They are a fine example of open formations in the subalpine zone of the Vosges mountains.
This collection of “high stubble fields” is dotted with subalpine beech forests, peat bogs, and spring areas.
➤ The Wormspel cirque is accessible via the sentier des névés. Its alpine appearance dates back to the Ice Age, when a lake was carved out and gradually colonized by vegetation and a peat bog. Today, these natural features have been destroyed to make way for the Schiessrothried lake, which has a dam and is surrounded by numerous hiking trails.
➤ The Wormsa Valley is a glacial valley and a listed natural site nestled in the sumptuous Grande Vallée de Munster, dotted with forests, rivers, and waterfalls that are remnants of the Quaternary Ice Age. It takes its name from the Wormsa, a tributary of the Fecht. Its numerous cirques, rocky ridges, and moraines will immediately remind you of an alpine landscape!
