Unique discovery of the famous Vosges springs
Our first stop is Le Tanet, a mountain on the Vosges crest rising to 1,292 metres. It gives its name to a small ski resort clinging to its Alsatian side. From here, we'll head off to discover Lac de Forlet and Lac Vert, lakes that will surprise many with their beauty and peaceful surroundings!
➤ Lac du Forlet, also known as Lac des Truites, is the highest of the Vosges lakes at 1,066m. Located at Le Forlet in the commune of Soultzeren in the Haut-Rhin department, it nestles in a wide glacial cirque surrounded by steep slopes culminating at 1,303 metres. It occupies an ancient glacial cirque with vertiginous walls between the Altenkraehkopf and the Aubenklangfelsen. You can fish here by contacting the Munster Valley Tourist Office.
➤ Lac Vert: also known as Lac de Soultzeren, this is a small glacier-type lake on the Alsatian side of the Vosges at the bottom of the Vallée de Munster. It lies at the foot of the Tanet massif, which rises to between 1,000 and 1,280 metres above sea level. The Tanet site overlooks the glacial cirques of Lac Vert and Lac des Truites, and we will then reach Tanet, a mountain on the Vosges ridge rising to 1,292 metres. It gives its name to a small ski resort clinging to its Alsatian side.

➤ Lac Blanc is a high-altitude lake in the commune of Orbey in the Haut-Rhin département. It is connected by a pipe to Lac Noir, 120 metres downstream, where a hydroelectric power station produces electricity by turbining at peak times, or recharges Lac Blanc by pumping at off-peak times. There is a climbing school at Rocher Hans. Icefalls up to 100 metres high can be seen in winter in the vicinity of the lake. Lac Blanc has a winter sports resort, where downhill skiing, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing and, for younger visitors, tobogganing are all practised.
➤ Lac Noir: is a high-altitude lake in the commune of Orbey in the Haut-Rhin département. Its outlet is the ‘ruisseau du lac Noir’, which joins the Weiss just before Orbey. A hydroelectric power station was built here between 1928 and 1933 by René Koechlin. The Lac Noir is linked to the Lac Blanc (120 metres higher) by a pipe that allows electricity to be generated by turbining at peak times, alternating with the recharging of the higher Lac Blanc by pumping at off-peak times. It has a capacity of 80 MW.
The day's programme
To ensure that your walk goes smoothly, the important points to remember are as follows:
Meet at the Col de la Schlucht, in front of the veranda of the Hôtel du Chalet, then a short 10-minute drive in a convoy to the start of the hike
After a gentle approach to nature, we reach the Tanet then head gradually down the valley to the fabulous Lac Vert.
From here, we'll head for the Lac du Forlet.
You'll have the chance to picnic, with a packed lunch at the water's edge. You can continue the walk in the afternoon to reach the springs of Lac Noir and Lac Blanc.
